Justice for Farmworkers

Carrying forward the moral vision of César Chávez

All the rest of the assignments ask you to consider the ways in which the MVCC has been carried forward, or not, over the past 15 years. I encourage the class as a whole to consider addressing, in pairs and groups, the four topical areas:

  1. Farm work, dignity of labor, union organizing, fighting for just wages. (Martin, Allen et al., For I was Hungry, Bishops of Tucson/Mexicali)
  2. Social justice, racial justice, immigration push factors (in rural Mexico) and pull factors (in agriculture). (Death of Ramon Gonzales)
  3. Agriculture, food access, food security, world food crisis, poverty. (FIWH, Wirth, Allen et al., Andrews, DRG 4)
  4. Technology in agriculture, pesticides, workplace conditions, Green Revolution in Mexico. (DRG 2 & 6, Warner)

As you go about reading the rest of the term (except Jesse), I encourage you to read for these topics, looking for items that can inform your understanding. In other words, read to acquire specific knowledge that you can use, as you would for research. My suggestions are in parentheses. Note that the topics above are not discrete; there is some overlap.
